How To Add A Time Scale

  1. Logging In
logging-in

Member Melanie has logged in. She sees her name along the horizontal bar, along with links to 'my folder', 'preferences', 'undo' and 'log out'.

  1. My Folder
my-folder

Melanie has clicked on 'my folder' (in the horizontal bar, next to her name). There are tabs above a new green horizontal bar. On the right side of the green bar are pull-down menus. We will use the 'Add Item' pull-down menu to add a geologic time scale.

  1. Add Item Menu

Melanie has clicked the 'add item' pull-down menu. Select the GeologicTimeScale choice.

  1. Data Entry

For short name, follow the directions, as here, with entry of 'timescale'. For Title, it doesn't matter what you type. For Description, just something descriptive. Note that this is just the top of a really big data entry panel, so you'll have to scroll down to see the rest.

After scrolling down a bit, you'll see many checkboxes above several data entry fields. All you have to do is check the top box for 'PNG'.

Look over the next set of data entry boxes, which are already filled in. The data is already there for quite a few events. You can learn how to enter your own events, but for now all you have to do is click the Save button at the bottom, and your time scale will be created (as a PNG image).

  1. Click on PNG
click-on-png

Software on the server has generated the timescale as a PNG graphic (you selected this choice). So, to see it, click 'PNG'.

  1. Timescale PNG
timescale-png

The PNG file is an image. The generating software used the official colors of the time units, and the official time boundaries to draw the units. This is a really big image -- the Earth is old -- you'll have to scroll down, and down, and down, and down....

  1. Contents Tab

After creating the timescale, you might want to click on 'my folder' and then the 'contents' tab at the left side of the green bar. This is how you get a listing of items in your folder, which for now is just the timescale you created. Don't forget to log out at upper right when you are done.
